Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary Kerala

Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, about 19 km from Kozhikode and 7 km from Beypore port on the Arabian Sea, Malappuram district, north Kerala. The Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is spread over a cluster of islands in a scenic area surrounded by hillocks where the Kadalundi River flows into the Arabian Sea. The place is locally known as Kadalundi Nagaram.

Kadalundi Bird SanctuaryThis virgin land is the abode of a hundred species of native birds and over 60 varieties of migratory birds that flock here in large numbers during February-March. A hillock nearby, which is 200 m above sea level, offers a splendid view of the river mouth and the sea. Kadalundi is also known for a wide variety of fish, mussels and crabs.
The number of birds in the approximately 2 sq.km area is quite astonishing. The variety is also excellent with terns, gulls, egrets, herons, sandpipers, brahmini kites and cormorants among others. The best time to see this sanctuary in all its glory is from November to April. To see the turtles it is necessary to explore in the forest department’s boat, as one has to move out into the open sea. Due to its location along the coast, the climate is excellent through most of the year. Visits should be avoided during the months of May to July as the area receives torrential rainfall during that time. A day trip from Kozhikode is enough to explore the sanctuary.

Kadalundi bird sanctuary is located at 19 kilometers from Kozhikode, Kerala, India. It is home to more than a hundred varieties of native birds. Every year, over 60 species of migratory birds congregate here in large numbers. The Kadalundi bird sanctuary is also famous for a large variety of Fish, Mussels and Crabs.

The Kadalundi bird sanctuary is famous for its birds. A lot of different varieties of birds are found here. The most famous species are cormorants, Malabar hornbills, woodpeckers, darters, plovers, kingfishers, and brahminy kites. All these can be found along the majestic backwaters of Kerala. Apart form these, one can also catch the sight of many species of butterflies and moths flying here and there. If that’s not enough, there are numerous species of turtles, crabs, and mudskippers waiting to be watched. You will find fish and even crocodiles deeper in the water.

Apart from the birds, the animals that can be spotted here include Elephants, Deers, Bears, Wild Pigs, Tigers and Leopards, Nilgiri Tahr, tigers, leopards, lion-tailed macaque, deer, monkeys, civet cats, squirrels including the Malabar giant squirrel.. Also to be seen here are snakes like Python, Cobra, Ciper, Rat Snake, Iguana and birds like Hornbills, Wood Peckers and King Fishers.

Climate : The climate in Kadalundi Bird sanctuary is excellent through out most of the year due to its location along the coast.

Best time to visit : The best time to visit the Kadalundi Bird sanctuary is from November to April. However, one should avid visiting this place during the months of May to July sine it is the time of heavy rainfall.

By Road : The sanctuary can be reached from Umily (4 kilometers), Thekkady, Madurai, Cochin and Thiruvananthapuram.

By Rail : The nearest railway station to Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is the Kumarakom railway station, which is at a distance of about 115 kilometers.

By Air : The nearest airport to Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is the Madurai airport, which is at a distance of 143 kilometers.
