Located in the thick forests of the northern Nilgiris, Mudumalai is famous for its wildlife sanctuary. It is noted among one of the most important wildlife sanctuaries of India. Nestled amidst the Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu, Mudumalai is a part of the greater Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The range of wildlife is the same as in Bandipur (another famous sanctuary near it) but the Mudumalai has two features which makes it different from its neighbor-the Moyar river, and proximity to the Nilgiri mountain ranges which give it wider access to varied wildlife including elephants and gaurs.
The main attraction in Mudumalai is Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary was set up in 1932 and since then has emerged as an important wildlife conservation park of India. Evergreen forests, grasslands, swamps and a wide variety of wildlife are the main characteristics of this park. Wildlife here includes Indian elephants, Gaur, tigers, panthers, deer, wild boar and monitor lizards. The sanctuary also abounds with civets, antelopes, langurs and macaques.
You can enjoy jungle safari on the vehicles of the Forest Department. While on way you can spot herds of elephants and spotted dear, the sambar that pricks its ears, langurs jumping from one tree to another and many exotic varieties of birds including black woodpecker, parakeets, barbets, mynas, cuckoos, Malabar trogon, Malabar gray hornbill, crested hawk eagle, and crested serpent eagle. You can also enjoy elephant ride to even explore the area inaccessible by vehicles.
