Surguja district is located in the northern part of Chhattisgarh State of India. Borders of Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh States are adjoining to the district. This district has over extension between south-eastern part of Vindhyachal - Baghelkhand region of peninsular India.
Temple carvings and archaic ruins date the history of this place to the era before Christ (BC). According to the holy books Lord Rama had visited Surguja during his fourteen years of exile and a number of places here are named after him, his brother Laxmana and wife Sita, including Ramgarh, Sita-Bhengra cave and Laxmangarh. Most of the local population is made up of the Pando and Korwa tribes, who regard themselves as descendants of the Pandavas and Kauravas (the warring clans of the epic Mahabharata) respectively. The average altitude of the area is 600 meters.

Ambikapur
Ambikapur city is located in the Surguja District of the Chhattisgarh State. This city is the headquarters of the entire Surguja District and is famous for the ancient Mahamaya Temple.There is a beautiful place Maa Mahamaya Mandir in Ambikapur city. It is awesome to see. There is a hill beside the mandir. Everyone who goes to Ambikapur, should visit the mandir.
Kudargarh
Kudargarh is a much-famed pilgrim center of Surguja. It is 98 km from theDistrict headquarters of Ambikapur, connected by an all weather road. The best time to vist is during Chaitra Navaratra (in the month of April).
Ramgarh
A high hill of the District with a peak, Ramgarh lies to the east of the great road from Allahabad to Rameshwaram, in the extreme south. Allahabad is about 384 km. From this hill. It rises abruptly from the surrounding plains of the former Rampur tappa of the District. The nearrest railway station viz. The Kharsia Railway Station (in Ramgarh District), is about 160 kms. Away.
Deepadih

Deogarh
A village of Ambikapur tahsil, Deogarh is situated on the bank of the Rihand amidst calm and quict scenic beauty. It lies about 1.5kms. To the west of the Bamlaya-Ambikapur Road. From Ambikapur its distance is about 40 kms. Towards south. The place is also called Deoria, due to the great number of divinities scattered all around. There are several mounds, formed by the debris of temples, each crowned with a deity.The archaeology of this place may date back to a very early age. Its Guuri-Shankar temple might have been constructed by a Nagavamsi ruler of the Bhara-siva dynasty during 110 B.C. to 78 A.D. About 475 persons lived in the village in 1971.
Rakasganda
The Rakasganda fall is a tourist spot situated in Surguja district of Chhattisgarh state, India. This fall is on Ren river. It is around 150 km from Ambikapur and around 60 km from Wadraf Nagar. Wadraf Nagar can be considered as a small city in between dense forest. Many transport buses are available, fromambikapur and Wadraf Nagar, to reach Balangi, the last village before Rakasganda. From Balangi four-wheelers or two-wheelers can be hired to reach Rakasganda. The best time to see Rakasganda is around April-June.
Semarsot
The Semarsot Wildlife Sanctuary is near Semarsot on the Ambikapur-Daltongunj Road. To reach Semarsot by rail, you have to get down at the Jainagar Railway Station which is the nearest to the place. The airport nearest to Semarsot is Varanasi. Tourists will find quality accommodation in the town of Ambikapur. The best time to visit the Semarsot Wildlife Sanctuary is from January to May, when you can spot herds of deer, like Nilgai, Chital, Sambar, Chinkara.
Tamor Pglain
The Tamor Pglain Wildlife Sanctuary which is also located in the Surjuga District is so called because of the 2 prominent features of this piece of land; the Tamor Hill and the Pingla Nalla (stream). Its terrain is also marked by the Moran River which passes it to finally drain its waters into the Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar in Uttar Pradesh. Bishrampur is the nearest railhead to the sanctuary. In the case of Tamor Pingla Wildlife Sanctuary too, Ambikapur makes a good halt for tourists who come to have a glimpse of the mixed wildlife of this sanctuary.
Thinthini Patthar
This 200 quintal rock is cylindrical in shape. When struck, you get a metallic echo, popularly believed to be divine.
Pawai Waterfall
This natural waterfall flows through the year and is a popular picnic spot.It is situated in Ramanujganj Block.
Kedai Waterfall
This natural waterfall is on the Bilaspur road.
Kailash Caves
Kailash Caves is situated at Sabarbar which is 60Kms to the east of Ambikapur. These caves were created by Saint Rameshwar Gahira Guruji. Temple of Lord Shiva-Parvati and also temple of different God-Goddess are there in caves. On occasion of Mahashivratri huge festival is organized here. Major attraction of this place are temple of Lord Shiva-Parvati,Yagya Mandap,Sanskrit school, Gahira Guru ashram,Badgdrat Beir and Badh mada.
Shiv Tmple
Pratappur is 45 kms far from Ambikapur, village Shivpur is 4 Kms from Pratappur. There located ancient Shiv temple in natural atmosphere. Big festival is organized on the occasion of Mahashivratri and Basan Panchami.
Tatapani
This is a hot water source, and hot water is flowing continuously. Tatapani is situated in the Balrampur block which is 95 Kms. from Ambikapur.
ATTRACTION OF DANCE SARGUJA DISTRICT
shaila dance
Only males participate in this group dance, performed during public functions, national festivals, and political rallies, and in January after cutting the crop. All the dancers hold two hard bamboo sticks and strike the sticks of their neighbour in unison.
Suwa Dance
This is a dance by which a young girl lets a young boy know she is interested in him. When a marriageable young boy listens this song and sees the girl dancing, he sends a marriage proposal to her parents. It is also danced to please the goddess of wealth.
Karma Dance
"Karam" is a tree worshipped by the locals. According to legend, in an ancient war, only a young couple that hid in the hollow trunk of this tree was left alive, and ever since then this tree has been regarded as sacred. The karma dance is peformed according to caste, but holds the same significance across all castes.Male and female dancers are chained together to form a circle. A branch of the karam tree is passed among the dancers as they sing and dance in praise of the karam tree. This branch should not touch the earth. At the end of the dance, it is washed with milk and rice beer and later it is planted in the middle of the dancing arena.
